  • September is Suicide Awareness Month

Suicide is a leading cause of death among children ages 10 to 14 in Colorado, and the second leading cause of death among teens nationwide. One of the best ways you can be an advocate for child health during Suicide Prevention Month is to learn more about suicide prevention efforts in Colorado and to get familiar with the resources that are available to support children and youth. Here are a few good places to get started:

I Matter Program – Permanently extended by Senate Bill 24-001 this past legislative session, the I Matter Program facilitates access to confidential, short-term mental health therapy for youth.

    - 988 Colorado Mental Health Line - The 988 Colorado Mental Health Line connects individuals with trained specialists offering mental health, emotional, and substance-use support.

    - Youth and Young Adult Suicide Prevention – The Office of Suicide Prevention at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment provides resources to bring hope, connectedness, and recovery to young people struggling with thoughts of suicide.

    - The Pediatric Mental Health Institute (PMHI) at Children's Hospital Colorado – PMHI provides articles, videos, resources and more to help parents and caregivers support their children’s mental health needs. Not sure where to start? Read “Teen Suicide Prevention: Teaching Kids to Ask” and “Why You Should Talk to Kids About Suicide” for helpful information on suicide warning signs and how to support kids and teens in your life.

Tell Congress to Protect Youth Mental Health Online

The opportunity to address the negative impacts of social media on youth mental health is coming before Congress through the Kids Online Safety Act (H.R. 7891), and we need your help telling our elected officials it is time to provide a safer environment for our kids online. Learn more and reach out to your representatives here
